Foothills Yetis Make History in Premier Hockey League with Championship Win
Foothills, Alberta — March 9, 2026
The Foothills Yetis made local hockey history this season as the first team from the Foothills region to compete in the Premier Hockey League (PHL). This past weekend in Trochu, the team capped off its inaugural season by winning the PHL Minor League Championship, marking a major milestone for hockey development in the Foothills area.
Formed this season, the Yetis were created to give U9 players in the Foothills the opportunity to compete at a higher level than what is traditionally available locally, through a development focused league that features full ice games, scorekeeping, penalties and structured positional play.
Entering the league as a brand new program, the Yetis quickly proved they could compete. Over the course of the season, players developed strong fundamentals including positional play, teamwork, passing and hockey IQ while building friendships that extended far beyond the rink.
The championship win reflects months of hard work from players, coaches and families who helped build the program from the ground up.
With the success of the season, the Foothills Yetis hope to continue expanding the program and creating more opportunities for young athletes in the region and will be adding a U11 program next season.
The organization will be hosting ID skates for players interested in future Yetis teams at Blackie Arena:
U9 ID Skates
March 17 and March 24
5:30 pm to 6:30 pm
U11 ID Skates
March 15 and March 22
6:15 pm to 7:45 pm
For many of the young athletes, the season was about more than just wins and losses. It was about learning the game, building confidence and representing the Foothills on a bigger stage.
